Ahmedabad carved a distinct niche for itself in the international sports arena by hosting the inaugural World Yogasana Championship from June 4 to June 8, 2026.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated this historic competition, held at the EKA Arena (TransStadia) in Gujarat, on June 4.
This event is regarded as a significant step towards establishing Yogasana as a competitive sport on the global stage.
India delivered a stellar performance at the championship, securing the top spot on the medal tally.
Indian athletes won a total of 114 medals, comprising 102 gold, 9 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
Japan finished second with 3 gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze medals. Meanwhile, Argentina secured the third position, winning 2 gold and 3 silver medals, driven by the outstanding performance of Nabila Barraza.
The success of the first World Yogasana Championship not only linked India's yoga tradition with the global sports platform but also gave Yogasana a new identity as an international competitive sport.
