सूचना : अधोलिखितं श्लोकान पठित्वा प्रश्नानां (प्र.सं. 292-300) विकल्पात्मकोत्तरेभ्य: उचिततमम् उत्तरं चित्वा लिखत। पुरा एकस्मिन् स्थाने द्वे नार्यौ वसत: स्म। तयो: परस्पं महती प्रीति:। कालतरे तयो: मध्ये एकस्य पुत्रस्य विषये महान् कलह: अजायत। सरला- अयं मम पुत्र इति सक्रोधम् उद्घोषयति। विमला- न अयं तव, अपितु अयं मम पुत्र: इति तारस्वरेण प्रतिवदति। इत्थं च क्रमेण तयो: कलह: चरमावस्थां गत: अथ विवादे पराकाष्ठं गते द्वे अपि न्यायालयं गतवस्यौ। तयो: वक्कीलौ स्व-स्वपक्षं न्यायाधीशस्य समक्षं सप्रमाणं प्रस्तुतवन्तौ। न्यायाधीश: उभयमपि पक्षं समम् अश्रुतपूर्वकं च ज्ञात्वा किंकर्तव्यविमूढ: सञ्जात:। स: प्रारम्भे अकथयत्- सर्वप्रथमम् अयं बालक: कया सह अधिकां प्रसन्नताम् अनुभवति इति ज्ञातव्यम्। स: तु उभाभ्यां सह प्रसन्न: दृश्यते इति ज्ञात्वा न्यायाधीश: निर्णतुं न समर्थ: अभवत् अयं वस्तुत: कस्या: पुत्र:। अधिकं सूक्ष्मं विचिन्त्य न्यायाधीश: अवदत् यत् मया उभय: पक्ष: श्रुत:। साम्प्रतं निर्णयं सावधानतया शृण्वन्तु। बालकं प्रति भवत्यो: समाना स्नेहमयी च प्रीति:। अत: इमं बालकं विभज्य अर्धम् अर्धं स्वीकुरुताम् । इमं निर्णयं श्रुत्वा विकला प्रसन्ना अभवत् । सरला तु मूच्र्छिता सती तत्क्षणमेव भूमौ अपतत् । सा नानाविधै: उपचारै: अर्धघण्टानन्तरं चेतनां लब्धवती। तत: च सा करौ प्रसार्य बहुविह्वला, अश्रुधाराभि: रुदती न्यायाधीशं प्रार्थयत् - मान्या:! मोहनस्य रोमांशच्छेदनमपि मम प्राणच्छेदनमसमम् अति दु:खकरं भविष्यति। भवन्तम् अस्य बालकस्य अहं जीवनं याचे। दीयताम् इमं बालकं विमलायै, यस्यै कस्यै वा इत्यत्र न मदीय: कोऽपि दुराग्रह:, किन्तु येन बालक: अयं, स्वस्थ:, सुखी चिरायु: च भवेत् तथैव भवद्भि: कर्तव्यम्। क्षणेन मौनं त्यक्त्वा न्यायाधीश: स्वनिर्णयम् अघोषयत्- वस्तुत: सरलाया: ममत्वं स्वाभाविकं, तस्या: मूर्छा च नैसर्गिकी, अत: सरलैव मोहनस्य माता इत्येव अस्य वादस्य निर्णय:। विमलाया: पक्ष न विचारयोग्य:। एवं न्यायाधीशस्य बुद्धिवैभवेन सरला स्वपुत्रं पुन: प्राप्य बहुप्रसन्ना अभवत् । विवादस्य निर्णयाय ते कुत्र गतवत्यौ?
