निम्नलिखितं गद्यांशं पठित्वा सप्तप्रश्नानाम् (129-135) उत्तराणि उचितं विकल्पं चित्वा देयानि। आदिगुरो: शंकराचार्यस्य जन्म केरलप्रान्ते कालडीनामके ग्रामे अभवत्। अस्य पितु: नाम शिवगुरु: आसीत्। अस्य जन्मन: प्रागेव स: दिवंगत:। माता आर्याम्बा एवास्य पालनमकरोत्। जन्मादैव प्रतिभासम्पन्नतया स कुलोचिता: विद्या: शीघ्रमेव अधीतवान्। मनसा, वचसा कर्मणा च विरक्त: शंकर : मातरं संन्यासस्यानुमतिम् अयाचत्। पुत्रस्नेहपरवशा सा शंकरस्य इमां प्रार्थनां न स्वीकृतवती। एकदा शंकर : नद्यां स्नातुं गत:। तत्र नेक्रेण गृहीत: स उच्चै: आक्रोशत्। आक्रोशं श्रुत्वा माता नदीतीर गता पुत्रं च नक्रेण गृहीतम् अपश्यत्। शंकर: अवदत् - ‘‘अम्ब! यदि संन्यासं ग्रहीतुं मामनुमंस्यसे तर्हि अहं नक्रात् मुक्तो अनिच्छन्त्यपि माता - ‘‘वत्स यथा तुभ्यं रोचते तथा कुरु’’ इति कष्टेनाकथयत्। एतच्छ्रुत्वा शंकर: नक्रात् नद्या: बहिर्निर्गत्य मातु: चरणयो: प्रणामं कृत्वा स: अवदत्, ‘‘मात:! यद्यपि सायं तथापि यदैव त्वं मां स्मरिष्यसि तदैव उपस्थितो भविष्यामि।’’ एवं निरगच्छत्। अथ परिव्राजकै : सह देशाद्देशं पर्यटन् शंकर: काश्यां गोविन्दपादाचार्येभ्य: वेदान्तविद्यामधीतवान्। अनन्तरं मुख्यानाम् उपनिषदाम् ब्रह्मसूत्राणां श्रीमद्भगवदगीतायाश्च भाष्याणि अरचयत्। अनेन विरचितानि बहूनि स्तोत्रकाव्यन्यापि सन्ति येषु भजगोविन्दस्तोत्रम् अतीव लोकप्रियमस्ति। एवं मन्यते यत् मरणासन्ना माता यदैवास्य स्मरणं अकरोत् तदैवायं तत्समीपं आगच्छत्। दिवंगतायां मातारि संन्यस्तोऽपि स: पुत्रोचितं सर्वं कृत्यं सम्पादितवान्। तत: सर्वत: परिभ्रमन् स जनेभ्य: अद्वैतवेदान्तसिद्धान्तस्य ज्ञानमुपदिष्टवान्। अस्मिन्नेव प्रचारक्रमे स द्वाारिकायां, बदर्यां, जगन्नाथपुर्यां, शृङ्गेर्यां च चतुर: मठान् समस्थापयत्। अन्ते च द्वात्रिंशे एव वयसि ब्रह्मभावम् उपगत:। शंकराचार्य: मातरं काम् अनुमतिम् अयाचत्?
