निर्देश:अधोलिखितं गद्यांशं पठित्वा तदाधारितप्रश्नानां विकल्पात्मकोत्तरेभ्य: उचिततमम् उत्तरं चित्वा लिखत। एकदा विजयसिंह: नाम कश्चित् राजा मृगयार्थं वनम् अगच्छत्। तत्र स: कस्यचित् ऋषे: आश्रमं प्राप्तवान्। तत्र स: ऋषे: अङ्गे उपविष्टं कञ्चन शुकम् अपश्यत्। ऋषि: शिष्यान् वेदमंत्रान् अपाठयत्। शुक: अपि छात्रै: सह वेदमन्त्रान् अगायत्। यदा आचार्य: शिष्यान् प्रश्नान् अपृच्छत् तदा शुक: अपि तै: सह उत्तराणि अवदत्। शुकस्य तद् पाण्डित्यं दृष्ट्वा राज्ञ: मन: तस्मै शुकाय अलोभत। स: ऋषिं तं शुकम् अयाचत। ऋषि: अवदत्- ‘‘राजन्, यथा इच्छसि तथा कुरु।’’ राजा ऋषे: अनुज्ञया तं शुकं वनात् राजप्रासादम् आनयत्। अहो आश्चर्य! तत्र आगत्य स: शुक: कदापि वेदमन्त्रान् न अगायत्। तत्रऽस्थितानां राजपुत्राणां सम्भाषणं, सेवकानां परस्पर कल्हान् अपशब्दान् च स: प्रतिदिनम् अशृणोत्। स: अपि तथैव भाषितुम् आरभत। शुकस्य मुखात् वेदमन्त्राणां स्थाने अपशब्दान् श्रुत्वा राजा चकित: अभवत्। अन्येद्यु: स: शुकं गृहीत्वा ऋषे: आश्रमम् आगत्य, अवदत् क्रोधेन - ‘‘आचार्य, भवत: एष शुक: वञ्चक:। एष अत्र आश्रमे वेदमन्त्रान् वदति, मम प्रासादे तु अपशब्दान् कलहपूर्णां वाणीं च वदति। न अहम् इच्छामि अस्य सहवासम्। स्वीकरोतु भवान् एव एनं खगम्।’’ इत्युक्त्वा स: तं शुकम् ऋषये अयच्छत् । ऋषि: शान्तेन मनसा महता प्रेम्णा तं शुकं अंके उपावेशयत्, अवदत् च- ‘‘राजन्, अनुकरणशील: अयं पक्षी । यद् शृणोति तदेव अनुवदति। प्रकृति: इयं तस्य। तस्मै किं श्रावणीयं किं वा न श्रावणीयम् इति अस्माभि: एव सम्यक् चिन्तनीयम्। भवान् आदौ आत्मपरीक्षणं करोतु अनन्तरमेव एनं शुकं दूषयतु।’’ ऋषे: वचनं श्रुत्वा राजा स्वापराधम् अवगम्य अधोवदन: तस्मात् आश्रमात् विनिर्गत:। राजा ऋषे: अंके कि अपश्यत्?
