His father, Samuel Edison, was in the lumber and grain business. His mother Nancy was a former School teacher. Young Edison’s eccentricities were evident quite early in life. He began earning by selling newspapers and food in trains. He then launched a small newspaper of his own, printing it in a railway carriage. He had to give it up when a reader incensed at his gossip column threw him fully clothed into a pool of water! He, however, continued to use his railway carriage as a mini physics-and-chemistry laboratory. But this too came to an end when there was an explosion in the carriage and the railway staff dumped him, along with his Paraphernalia, at the nearest level crossing!
