Passage The massive fort of Jodhpur looked down from the hill at the new city which had sprawled out around the old one. The desert lay beyond the city. It crouched there like a lion and was the colour of one, its rippled tawny pelt flea-specked here and there with small clumps of scrub. A gritty wind blew out of it, little rivers of sand eddied briefly down the pavements, then were snatched back into the air and flung like a challenge to the South. At the edge of the city, herds of camels twined their long necks around stunted trees, as though they were snakes. Then, there were no more trees. Tall whirlwinds of sand marched down towards us from the horizon. The desert enclosed us for the next ten days. There was a glare and dazzle on the skyline at dawn, then the ferocious eye of summer opened for a long look at its domain. For the next twelve hours it scowled down at the sand. We closed our eyes, visualized shadow and water, narrowed them open once more to the parch and scald of the desert wind. The shifting wind caused the dunes constantly to collapse and reform or drifted them lazily out as bulwarks across the road. The car had to stop at frequent intervals, so that we could clear the heaped sand away or because one of the tyres, hissing on the burning surface of the tarmac, had exploded. अधोलिखितं गद्यांशं पठित्वा तदाधारित - प्रश्नानां (346- 352) विकल्पात्मकोत्तरेभ्य: उचिततमम् उत्तरं चित्वा लिखत– स: कञ्चन लघुकुटुम्ब:। तस्मिन पितरौ, पुत्र:, पुत्री च आसन् । एकस्मिन् दिने मध्याह्ने पुत्र: भोजनार्थं गृहम् आगत:। माता जलचषकं स्थालिकां च संस्थाप्य अन्नं सारं च पर्यवेषयत् । पुत्र: कवलमात्रं खादित्वा जननीम् अगर्हयत् - ‘‘अम्ब ! किमिदम् ? सार: सम्पूर्ण: लवणमय: । एतत् खादितुं कथं शक्येत ? मह्यं भोजनं मास्तु......’’ मातरं भत्स्र्यमान: एव स: कोपेन गृहात् बहि: गतवान् । सायं दीपज्वालनसमय: अभवत् । तथापि स: युवा पुत्र: गृहं न आगत:। रात्रौ अष्टवादनसमये आगत: स: हस्तपादं प्रक्षाल्य दूरदर्शनस्य पुरत: आसन्दे उपाविशत् , हस्तेन नियन्त्रकं (रिमोट्) गृहीत्वा। निमेषाभ्यन्तरे पिता पुत्रस्य समीपम् आगत:। तं दृष्ट्वा पुत्र: चिन्तितवान्- ‘किमिदं पिता मम समीपे एव आगच्छति ! एतावत्पर्यन्तम् एकवारमपि जल्पनादिकं तेन न कृतं मया सह । इदानीं मां गर्हयितुम् एव आगच्छन् स्यात् प्राय: स:।...’ परन्तु अवनतवदनस्य पुत्रस्य पाश्र्वे उपविशन् पिता प्रावोचत् - ‘‘वत्स, भवान् मध्याह्ने भोजनं कृतवान् ननु ?’’ ‘‘......’’ ‘‘वत्स ! भवन्तम् एव अहं पृच्छामि । भवान् मध्याह्ने भोजनं कृतवान् किम् ?’’ ‘‘आम् !’’ - किञ्चित् रूक्षतया अवदत् पुत्र:। ‘‘कुत्र ?’’ मृदुस्वरेण एव अपृच्छत् पिता। ‘‘मम सुहृद: माम् उपाहारमन्दिरं नीत्वा भोजनं कारितवन्त:’’- किञ्चदपि अविचलित: सन् पुत्र: उक्तवान् । ‘‘सुष्ठु, पुत्र ! सुष्ठु ! भवान् भोजनं कर्तुम् इच्छति चेत् भवता समग्रे अपि विश्वे गृहाणि प्राप्येन् । तत्र ते तुभ्यं स्वादु भोजनमपि दद्यु: परन्तु भवत: मात्रे अस्माकं गृहमेव प्रपञ्च:। तस्या: लोके अहं, भवान् भवत: अनुजा च एव वसाम:। अस्माकं त्रयाणां हितमेव तस्या: लक्ष्यम्। भवता भोजनं न कृतम् इत्यत: सा एतावत्पर्यन्तं बिन्दुमात्रं जलम् अपि न स्वीकृतवती। इतोऽपि तस्या: मन: परितपत् अस्ति- ‘अद्य मया किं कृतम् ! पाकसमये मम अवधानं कुत्र अगच्छत् ? मम अजागरूकताकारणत: सार: लवणमय: जात:। तदर्थं पुत्र: किञ्चिदपि न भुक्तवान् । स: कुत्र गतवान् स्यात् ? क्षुत्पिपासानिवारणार्थं स: कीदृशं कष्टम् अनुभूतवान् स्यात् इति न ज्ञायते’ इति ’’ इति उक्तवान् पिता। पितु: हृदयस्पर्शिनीं वाणीं श्रुत्वा पुत्र: आत्मावलोकनम् अकरोत् । तत: सावधानतया उत्थाय शनै: शनै: जनयित्र्या: समीपम् अगच्छत् । सा म्लानवदना खिन्ना च भूत्वा उपविष्टवती आसीत् तत्र। पुत्र: विनयेन ताम् उपसपर्य मृदुमधुरेण मन्दस्वरेण अकथयत् - ‘‘अम्ब ! महती बुभुक्षा मम। किं न परिवेषयसि अविलम्बेन ?’’ इति।पुत्र: भोजनं न कृतवान् इत्यत: माता कीदृशी आसीत् ?
