उपरोक्त indirect speech में 'where' से स्पष्ट है कि sentence interrogative है। इसको direct बनाने के लिए निम्न परिवर्तन करने होंगे। (i) enquired को asked में परिवर्तित करना होगा (ii) वाक्य के tense, past continuous को present continuous में परिवर्तित करेंगे। (iii) reported speech में wh-word (pees who/what /how/ where/when/why आदि से शुरू होते हैं) हो तो reported speech के पहले अर्थात् interrogative word के पहले किसी conjunction का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता है। Correct direct sentence- The policeman asked him, “Where is your helmet?”
