In the 11th century, Mahmud Ghaznavi attacked India 17 times with the aim of acquiring wealth and spreading Islam in the region. In 1025, the Somnath temple located at Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Saurashtra on the western coast of Gujarat was attacked and looted. Somnath temple is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Hindus and is the first of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shiva.
