Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar tendered his resignation

  • Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has submitted his resignation to President Draupadi Murmu late Monday night, citing health reasons. The President has accepted his resignation.
  • This resignation comes at a time when the Monsoon Session of Parliament has begun and has fuelled speculation in political circles.
  • Dhankhar took over as Vice President in August 2022 and his term was scheduled till August 2027.
  • He is the third Vice President of India to resign before the completion of his term.
  • Earlier, V.V. Giri and R. Venkataraman had also resigned midway through their tenure, both of whom did so to contest the presidential election.
  • Dhankhar wrote in his resignation letter, "In order to give priority to health care and follow medical advice, I hereby resign from the post of Vice President of India with immediate effect, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution."
  • After his resignation, the post of Vice President has now fallen vacant, and the Election Commission of India will soon start the election process to fill the post. According to the Constitution, this vacancy must be filled "as soon as may be".
