Former Uruguay President Jose Mujica has died at the age of 89.
The straight-talking Mujica, known to many Uruguayans by his nickname "Pepe," led the small agricultural country's left-wing government from 2010 to 2015.
As president, Mujica took a pioneering liberal stance on issues related to civil liberties.
He signed legislation allowing gay marriage and abortion in the early stages of pregnancy and supported a proposal to legalize the sale of marijuana.
Mujica once led the Tupamaros rebel group and spent 15 years in prison, most of it in solitary confinement.
